Well, we did it. We got through the past 365 days. Some of us got out of last year by the skin of our teeth. Others of you may have been blessed with bountiful windfalls of opportunities. Either way, I’m happy for those of you who find yourselves embracing this new moon, New Year, right now in the moment and perhaps facing changes in the process.
Yup, that’s right. This New Year coincides with the new moon. That’s heavy, peeps. I mean, we all know about the symbolic implications of the new moon phase. However, this is the first new moon taking place during this New Year. With all this newy-new energy pummeled at us, this is a time of paying keen attention to ourselves and our environment. Why? Because this time is replete with opportunities to encourage transition and help us when facing changes.
Symbolic New Moon, New Year Implications
Whether you made New Year’s resolutions or not, let’s face it – this is a new era in time. As such, it beckons reflection. It might even prompt recapitulation – a state in which we sum up the highlights of our life history and ponder them in an effort to make sense or gain cohesion.
Whatever way you ring in this New Year, the truth is that this is a time most of us look back in order to brace for the future. After all, as the Spanish philosopher and poet, Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana y Borrás said…
While evaluating the past is a great practice during the new moon, New Year essence is equally charged with observing opportunities that are not yet unveiled. This is an inchoate time – replete with beginnings, potentials, and unknowns. That’s worthy of consideration too. Here are a few thoughts about facing changes during the evergreen start to the New Year.
A Time of Reflection and Forecasting
So, we’ve already briefly discussed some of the implications of this special new moon during the New Year. What are we going to do about it? Here are some ideas:
Visit Memories of Moons’ Passed
This new moon, New Year invites us to walk down memory lane. Bring out scrapbooks. Play old family films. Revisit your journals. You get the idea. This is a great time of year to reconnect with our past while preparing for the new future ahead. Maybe you could light a candle for loved ones who have passed on. Have a ceremony for people and the halcyon days gone by while setting an intention to welcome new friends and memories in the new year. Facing changes isn’t easy, but when we take the time to revisit better times, it often gives us the strength to move forward with assurance.
Embrace The Void
While beautiful and inspiring, technically, the moon is not a source of illumination. It relies on the light of the sun to cast its luminous light upon our watching eyes. Furthermore, the new moon is in such a position that it cannot embrace the light of the sun. Symbolically, this prompts us to embrace the darkness. Now, that might sound scary – but really, it’s about being prepared and self-assured enough to step into the unknown. It might take some chutzpah, but try to sit mindfully in the void. Let the shadows of the unknowns the future holds surround you, and try to be content with that sensation during this new moon.
Grow and Change With Illumination
As you move through facing changes that will inevitably come this upcoming year – visualize expansion. Utilize the growing moonlight to do this. To explain, the new moon starts dark, but with each night it becomes more fully illuminated. Use the moon phases in your own life as you experience transitions. See the light of love, growth, success, etc expanding in your life. Mindfully direct the increasing luminations of this waxing moon and feel it energizing every aspect of your life as it becomes more full and bright.
Press the Restart Button
Oh, if it were that easy, right? Just starting over with a press of a button, wouldn’t that be great? We all know life doesn’t work that way. Starting anew takes work. It can be hair-raising and extremely uncomfortable. But, if you’re in a rut, unhappy, or just fed up with the samey-same, this new moon, New Year is a perfect opportunity to reinvent yourself and your life. In other words, the new moon energy combined with the kickstart of this new year both support your efforts to make a fresh start.
The Symbolism of This New Moon, New Year
Whether you take these suggestions or not, it’s important to acknowledge the energy of this particular time of year. We’ve got some pretty intense symbolic themes of renewal in that…
1. The new moon is symbolic of renewal and new beginnings
2. The New Year is all about entering a new phase of time and life
Taking Advantage of This Time for Easier Transformation
These two aforementioned symbolic elements are strong on their own. Now combine that with mass consciousness. Millions if not billions of people around the world are thinking about facing changes during the New Year. Because we are all connected, you can leverage that mass-conscious impetus for change in your own life.
It’s like that saying “A rising tide raises all ships.” The energy of millions of people this time of the year wanting to see positive change in their lives is buoying energy. It lifts you and me; it’s motivating energy that can give us the oomph we need to get through our own personal changes. Then add the renewing power of the new moon into the mix, and you’ve got a cosmic cocktail for smoother transformations.
Whatever you do with this new moon, New Year is upon us and it’s bound to unveil changes in life. It might be a good idea to be mindful about facing changes rather than feel like a feather flailing through the chaotic winds of future transitions. At any rate, thank you for reading and I wish you all the best this year and beyond.
Mighty brightly,
