15 Symbolic Animals That Represent Calm and Mindfulness

Last Updated on October 26, 2024 by Avia

Most of my personal techniques for practicing mindfulness and getting calm are incredibly effective. That’s why I share my tips with all of you sweet peeps – because they work!  But sometimes, my usual go-to methods don’t hold enough intrigue – they’re not sticky enough – especially when I’m whirling in anxiety and swirling in stress.  That’s when I lean more deeply into nature. You see, nature and the animal realm are infinitely generous when it comes to providing direction, guidance, insight – and, yes, tranquility.  After a nerve-wracking day, there’s nothing like swimming with a whale in a meditation or soaring the skies with an elegant heron to soothe the edges.  In the hope that my animal encounters might be useful to you, I’m sharing 15 symbolic animals that represent calm and mindfulness.  I’ll also dive into why these animals symbolize calm and how they can help you stay more mindful.  And stick with me to the end because I’ve got some killer-keen meditations you can do with these critters that I think will really rock your world (in a calm, unpluggy way).  Ready to chill? Let’s roll this beautiful animal mindfulness footage!

Can Certain Animals Make Us Feel More Calm?

Maybe you’re like me and want to hop down to the goodies and get the real scoop on animals that represent calm and mindfulness.  But for those of you who want the backstory, here’s the down-low.

Can animals make us feel more calm or more mindful?  Truth is, certain animals can definitely push our calm buttons. Their presence can shift our mood and restore our inner peace.  So, yes – there are some animals who are up to the challenge of easing our internal turmoil and can help us chill out.

But there’s a catch. You can’t expect these animals to just show up, wave a magic wand, and wave away our woes.  Nope.  It takes our effort, too.  We’ve still got to be present, connect with an animal, relax into their energy, and forge a bond that results in a cathartic release.

I’ll get to uniting with animals that represent calm for mindfulness practices in a minute.  For now, suffice it to say that some creatures are masters at evoking sensations of ease and relaxation.  In fact, research supports this notion. Studies show that being around animals or meditating upon them can reduce stress levels.

How Do Symbolic Animals Represent Calm and Mindfulness?

To answer that question, I want to bring one paramount fact to your attention:  We are all connected.  Once you realize our world, universe, environment, bodies, brains, blood – it’s all connected – then you’ll understand that everything we give attention to both impacts us and the object of our attention.

Next, we need to accept that what we focus on (and how we focus) plays a big role in our level of calm and self-awareness.  In effect, certain animals can trigger moods of affection, peacefulness, or joy.  Alternatively, some animals (for some people) can result in opposite feelings of discomfort.

When you merge with animals that represent calm, you’re stimulating receptors in your brain, body, and spirit that are actually communicating or exchanging with an animal.  It’s a shamanic practice that anyone can do, and it’s been proven to have an influence on our mood and behavior.

On a spiritual level, certain symbolic animals can evoke a sense of calm and peacefulness through their unique traits and behaviors. As we acknowledge how each creature can embody qualities that inspire tranquility, we see they can offer us a mirror to reflect on our own thoughts and emotions.

Furthermore, the act of immersing yourself in animal meditation and digging into their symbolic essences can also forge connections between nature and human experience. Their existence serves as gentle reminders to embrace stillness amidst chaos. Engaging with these creatures conjures up awareness in the present moment, which is what it takes to become more self-aware, calm, and mindful.

15 Symbolic Animals for Mindfulness and Calming Vibes

Now that I’ve (hopefully) clarified how some animals can absolutely put you in a place of cool, chill, calm – what’s next? Getting to know certain animals that are crackerjack masters of staying collected, and in return, can help us get more mindfully calm too.  Ready to rock? Let’s go.

Praying Mantis

Deliberate, patient, purposeful – the praying mantis (stick bugs can help too) are fabulous focal features for getting into a mindful grove.  They embody stillness and focus, and by adopting them in our hearts, minds, and meditations we can too.

Observe a mantis, and you’ll be treated to an enlightening experience.  More often than not, these enchanting creatures sit in quietude, waiting for their next snack to amble by while the mantis remains unwavering in concentration.  This is a huge reminder that we can do the same thing. We can be patient, wait, and observe opportunities come into our lives just like the mantis does.

The mantis makes the list of animals that represent calm and mindfulness also because it’s an insect of expansive note in various cultures and ancient belief systems.  In many cultures, it’s considered a symbol of tranquility, balance, and peacefulness.  It’s an icon that stands for mindful movement and action.

Tiger

Okay, when the tiger is in full-on action, it might not be an ideal candidate for invoking calm and peace.  However, when at rest, this regal creature is a master of grace, reserved power, and self-awareness.  With magnificent stealth and keen intellect, the tiger brings us an element of strategic mindfulness that really comes in handy – especially when we require deeply focused moments to gain clarity or direction.

As an animal that represents calm and mindfulness, it’s a good idea to recall that tigers are solitary cats.  This is a cue for us too.  It’s a reminder that solitude renders reflection, and reflection can result in mindful restfulness.  So, when things seem way too chaotic, do what the tiger does, find some alone time, reflect, and rest.

I rather like the irony of the tiger as a calm cat.  On the one hand, these are fierce animals capable of blinding aggression when needed.  But that’s the thing – even though they can rip your face off – they still have moments of sheer, blissed-out, peaceful harmony.  That’s telling.  It says that while we as humans are capable of aggression, we also have the same amount of power to go within and be at peace in any given moment.

Octopus

My personal favorite.  When I’m really in a deep jam, the octopus always wends its way in my consciousness, helps me find solutions, and gets me stabilized again.  Of course it does, because this spectacular creature is known for its resourcefulness, adaptability, and intelligence. Plus, it looks so cool!  Those changing colors and textures, and those sensual tentacular gyrations – it’s mesmerizing, really, and it always works to elevate my moods.

A big advantage the octopus has an a creature that represents calm is its affiliation with water. Water is a huge symbol that is often used to demonstrate tranquility, healing, cleansing, and ease.

In many cultures, the octopus is a symbol of creativity and flexibility.  You can see that as you observe an octopus effortlessly glide through water. Their graceful movements are an elixir for getting creative juices flowing.  Just watch, and I’ll bet my buttons you’ll be hypnotized.

I especially like the octopus as a mentor. When our lives feel all tangled up in problems, this marine mollusk reminds us to stay composed (as it does) and adapt when times are unstable or turbulent.  In a big way, the octopus is a fabulous grounding feature, and it often leads us to stability and clarity.

Owl

When you’re tied up in cerebral knots, the owl can relieve that mental pressure.  At least it does for me, and it makes sense (also to me) because the owl has served as a symbol for intuition and wisdom in many cultural traditions.  When we invite the owl into our musings and meditations, it’s an effective way to find clarity, relax, and calm down.

It’s not lost on me that the owl is a nocturnal creature and is known to, in a sense, “see at night.” We can borrow this power from the owl and see things more clearly – even when everything is topsy-turvy.  Lean on the owl to move through obscurities and obstacles; it will proffer mindfulness and stillness in the midst of flying details. Owls also encourage mindfulness by teaching us to observe rather than react hastily. This gentle approach fosters a sense of peace within.

In various cultures, the owl is revered as a guardian spirit or guide through transitions. Connecting with this majestic bird opens pathways toward introspection and reflective practices—perfect for meditation sessions focused on serenity.

Turtle

Watch a turtle, and I double-dare you to feel anxiety.  It just doesn’t happen (at least not normally).  They amble, sunbathe, and waddle through water without rushing.  Turtles have a pace that’s naturally slow and calming.  This can be a tremendous help to any of us who are caught up in the “rush, rush, hurry, hurry” vibe.

In many cultures, turtles symbolize longevity and wisdom. They teach us the value of staying grounded, even when faced with challenges. The protective shell represents safety, encouraging mindfulness in our daily lives.

In terms of animals that represent calm, the turtle is a card-carrying member.  When we stop to connect with these glorious reptiles, mindfulness becomes more achievable.  Moreover, meditation practices with the turtle are also healthy because they encourage deep breathing and reflection.

Snake

Another personal favorite calming buddy of mine, the snake embodies a sense of calm.  It’s also of transformation, which makes it a great ally in meditation because you can actually visualize the snake wending through problems or shedding its (and yours, by association) skin of all the stressful soils of everyday life.  For sure, the snake’s inherent stillness can be a soothing, healing salve on the mind and soul.

Speaking of healing, the snake is a symbol of just that in many ancient cultures and traditions.  It’s been an icon for letting go, renewing oneself and releasing negative influences that might stunt our growth.

Additionally, the way snakes navigate through their environment teaches patience and focus. They don’t push or rushy-rush; instead, they move with quiet, surging intention. This deliberate pace invites us to slow down and engage fully with the present moment.  Needless to say, the snake can be sensationally grounding for anyone seeking refuge from stress and wanting inner peace.

Whale

Picture it, Submerged several meters in the dark blue ocean, there lumbers a titanic whale – resting, watchful, aware, and awaiting you.  How mellow can it get?  Whales are majestic creatures that embody tranquility in the ocean’s depths. Their slow, rhythmic movements evoke a sense of peace and mindfulness. Watching these gentle giants glide through the water can be a superlative meditative experience.

These animals communicate with haunting melodies, creating an atmosphere of calm. Their songs resonate deep within us, reminding us to slow down and be present in the moment. As a matter of fact, you can even turn on some whale song to lull you into a more calm and tranquil state of being (works for me!).

Symbolically, whales represent emotional depth and intuition. They encourage us to explore our inner selves while fostering a connection with nature. Moreover, they are deemed as protectors and guides on spiritual journeys. This just adds to the many layers the whale brings to the game when it comes to finding comfort in our minds, hearts, and lives.

Sloth

They’re just so goshdarned cute (if you ask me).  But more than that, they are the quintessential essence of chilling out.  They seem to just exude a message that says, “Chill, dude!”

Slow movements and relaxed demeanor remind us to take life at our own pace.  They’re also known to spend most of their time hanging from trees, which just fortifies the idea that sloths are animals that represent calm and mindfulness. I know I’d be super chill-axed if I could hang out in trees all day doing not much but lolling about.

When not in trees, sloths are outstanding swimmers and floaters. As mentioned earlier, water is a great calming agent.  Imagine floating down a lazy river with a sloth, and I think you’ll start to get that chill vibe to calm down after a hectic day.

Swan

When you bring the lovely visage of swans into your mind, think about their elegance as they smoothly float effortlessly across a lake or a stream. That’s the kind of calm and peacefulness this beauty can bring when you focus.  Often associated with grace and tranquility, the swan’s serene presence gliding on water embodies calmness like no other. Watching these birds can instantly bring peace to your mind.

Remember the water connection too.  It’s a symbol of cleansing, restoration, purification, and healing.  Water combined with the swan’s sophisticated dignity and enchanting beauty – you’ve got yourself a fine feathered friend for serenity in the swan.

Swans symbolize purity and love in many cultures. They are known for forming strong bonds, representing loyalty and commitment. This connection goes beyond mere companionship; it reflects deep emotional ties that encourage mindfulness in relationships.

Practicing meditation while visualizing a swan can enhance feelings of serenity. Imagining their soft feathers or the ripples created by their graceful movements encourages relaxation and mental clarity—perfect for anyone seeking inner peace.

Deer

Deer can be elusive, and when they’re in an unthreatening environment, they have the potential to strike a supreme pose of peace and composure. Deer are often seen as gentle creatures, embodying grace and tranquility in their natural habitat. Their soft eyes and serene demeanor can evoke a sense of peace within us.

These animals represent mindfulness due to their ability to remain present in the moment. They move quietly, always aware of their surroundings, reminding us to tune into our own environment.  Additionally, the dear is a serene symbol of nurturing and compassion in many cultures.  We could easily argue that these are qualities that foster a calm mind, wouldn’t you agree?

Butterfly

One simple communion with a butterfly has the potential to transform you – at least, that’s my experience.  After all, butterflies are almost ubiquitously known as being a symbol of transformation and metamorphosis.  Just picture them flitting from flower to flower – so focused on their purpose, yet leaving behind such elegance and beauty.  It’s truly a serene scene.

Along with change, butterflies are symbolic of new beginnings and rebirth – all terrific sentiments to accompany you through a calming shamanic practice with the butterfly to elevate your mood and render calm. As you contemplate this lovely being, think about the things it represents – it will bolster your ability to get to the stress-free levels you’re seeking.

The effects of butterfly meditations?  It fortifies stillness within the mind, body, and spirit. It encourages stillness within you.  Simply visualize their soft colors and elegant movements and sense stress beginning to fade away, replaced by tranquility and acceptance.

Dragonfly

I hope you agree, the dragonfly is a fascinating creature, often associated with transformation and the lightness of being. Its delicate wings glimmer in the sunlight, making it a beautiful symbol of serenity.

Dragonflies are agile flyers, effortlessly navigating through the air. This gracefulness can inspire mindfulness as we learn to move gently through our own lives. Observing their dance reminds us of the importance of being present in each moment.

These insects also symbolize change and adaptability. Their life cycle—from aquatic nymph to airborne adult—reflects resilience and growth. By embracing this symbolism, we can find calm even amid life’s shifting currents.

In many cultures, dragonflies embody joy and starting anew. They encourage us to let go of worries and embrace tranquility instead. Watching them flit about can evoke feelings of peace that linger long after they’ve flown by.

Vulture

Another favorite of mine!  Vultures often get a bad rap. They are seen as scavengers, but there’s much more to them than meets the eye.

Observe how they soar through the sky, patiently circling around, finding their next big score.  Can you imagine? If you can, try to be like the vulture and just hang glide through the aerial view of your woes and stress.  Now, see yourself swiping away at those troubles with your tremendously long wing span.  Then, keep floating, swirling, and flying above the world – a world far beyond your worries and trials.

I know vultures aren’t everybody’s favorite feathered friend, but when you take the time to learn, observe, and commune with them – you’ll see these are amazing animals that represent calm and mindfulness.

These carrion birds symbolize transformation and renewal in many cultures. By consuming decaying matter, they play an essential role in the ecosystem. Their ability to thrive on what others discard teaches us about acceptance and letting go.

Believe it or not, vultures can inspire us to embrace change rather than fear it. Instead of shying away from difficult situations, we can learn to face them with grace—just like these remarkable creatures do every day.

Heron

The symbolism of the heron is all about serenity and tranquility.  In fact, their graceful postures and slow movements embody calmness in many cultures. Often found standing still by the water’s edge, it teaches us the value of patience.  Sure, they may wreak havoc with the fish in my pond, but herons definitely have a way that is soothing.

These elegant birds are masters of mindfulness. They remind us to be present and attentive to our surroundings. When hunting for fish, a heron remains focused, displaying an unwavering sense of purpose.

Many people find solace in watching these beautiful creatures glide through the air or wade gracefully across a pond. Their presence invites contemplation and relaxation into our daily lives, fostering a deeper connection with nature’s rhythms.

Bonus Animal: Dogs!

In my world, it’s all about the dogs. My dogs have saved my emotional and mental life. Without them…well, I don’t have enough room in the blog-o-sphere to talk about how much those precious babies have helped me find my calm. Dogs have an innate ability to soothe the soul. Their unwavering loyalty and gentle demeanor make them exceptional companions for those seeking calmness.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, spending time with a dog can be incredibly grounding. Whether it’s a playful pup or a serene senior, their presence fosters mindfulness. The simplest act like petting a doggie can release those “feel-good” hormones in our bodies.

Many find comfort in observing how dogs live fully in the moment. They remind us to embrace joy in simplicity—go for a walk, play ball, bond together – it can transform our mood entirely.

Their unconditional love teaches us about trust and patience, reminding us that peace often lies within companionship. Dogs embody calm by teaching us to slow down and appreciate life’s little pleasures, making them perfect symbols of tranquility and mindfulness.
